Independent Higher Education Australia (IHEA) welcomes the increase in the Government’s National Planning Level to 295,000 international student places for 2026, announced earlier today.
IHEA remains opposed to caps on international student intakes and differing treatment between the public and private sides of the higher education sector. However, increased certainty and modest growth for all independent higher education providers is an improvement for Australia’s largest services export industry.
IHEA Chief Executive Officer Dr Peter Hendy said: “It is heartening to see Government’s rhetoric recognising the importance of international higher education to the Australian economy.”
“The independent higher education sector is an Australian asset, both as a source of jobs and growth for Australians, and as a means for tens of thousands of Australians to attain a quality tertiary education,” Dr Hendy said.
“We will continue to work with Government to achieve equity for independent higher education when compared to public universities,” Dr Hendy said.
